An earthquake of 8.0 magnitude has struck off Chile’s coast near Iquique, triggering a tsunami warning for all of Latin America’s Pacific coast, the US Geological Survey has reported.
The quake was 10km deep and centred 99 kilometres off the Chilean coast.
Tsunami warnings have been issued for Chile, Peru and Ecuador. “Sea level readings indicate a tsunami was generated,” the Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre said in its advisory. “It may have been destructive along coasts near the earthquake epicentre and could also be a threat to more distant coasts.”
