This Is The Video CNN Will Play When The World Ends

Cable News Network, CNN, was launched by Ted Turner 34 years ago.

At the news network’s launch party, Turner boldly declared that CNN was not going anywhere – ever.

“Barring satellite problems, we won’t be signing off until the world ends,” he said. “We’ll be on, and we will cover the end of the world, live, and that will be our last event. We’ll play the National Anthem only one time, on the first of June [the day CNN launched], and when the end of the world comes, we’ll play ‘Nearer My God To Thee’ before we sign off.”

Though it may have seemed like an attempt to boost confidence in CNN, Jalopnik has uncovered evidence Turner may have made those statements in earnest.

On CNN’s MIRA archive system, there’s a video simply named “TURNER DOOMSDAY VIDEO.”

It features exactly 1 minute of a band playing “Nearer My God To Thee” before it fades to black.

It’s tagged with a note in large red letters that reads “[Hold For Release] till end of the world confirmed.” The writer who discovered the video, Michael Ballaban, was an intern at CNN in 2009.

The video would fit the average 1980’s television set – it’s in standard definition and has the 4:3 size ratio typical of television screens at the time.

Though CNN has not commented on the video, “Nearer My God To Thee” is allegedly the same song played by musicians as the Titanic sank.
