Obama Bans Bullets Of America’s Top-Selling Rifle Through Executive Action

obama-signing-680x365 WashingtonExaminer.com| Through executive action, Obama has banned ammo for the top-selling AR-15 style semi-automatic, labeling them ‘cop killers’, and The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives will put the ban of 5.56 mm ammo on a fast track, which already driving up price and demand.

Gun stores are now reporting an increase in price of 30% and an increase in demand of 1000%.

Wednesday night, Rep. Bob Goodlatte, the Republican chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, stepped in with a critical letter to the bureau demanding it explain the surprise and abrupt bullet ban. The letter is shown below.

The National Rifle Association, which is working with Goodlatte to gather co-signers, told Secrets that30 House members have already co-signed the letter and Goodlatte and the NRA are hoping to get a total of 100 fast.

“The Obama administration was unable to ban America’s most popular sporting rifle through the legislative process, so now it’s trying to ban commonly owned and used ammunition through regulation,” said Chris W. Cox, executive director of the NRA-ILA, the group’s policy and lobby shop. “The NRA and our tens of millions of supporters across the country will fight to stop President Obama’s latest attack on our Second Amendment freedoms.”

At issue is so-called “armor-piercing” ammunition, an exemption for those bullets mostly used for sport by AR-15 owners, and the recent popularity of pistol-style ARs that use the ammo.

The inexpensive 5.56 M855 ammo, commonly called lightgreen tips, have been exempt for years, as have higher-caliber ammunition that also easily pierces the type of soft armor worn by police, because it’s mostly used by target shooters, not criminals. The agency proposes to reclassify it as armor-piercing and not exempt.

But now BATFE says that since the bullets can be used in semi-automatic handguns they pose a threat to police and must be banned from production, sale and use. But, as Goodlatte noted, the agency offered no proof. Federal agencies will still be allowed to buy the ammo.

“This round is amongst the most commonly used in the most popular rifle design in America, the AR-15. Millions upon millions of M855 rounds have been sold and used in the U.S., yet ATF has not even alleged — much less offered evidence — that even one such round has ever been fired from a handgun at a police officer,” said Goodlatte’s letter.

Even some police don’t buy the administration’s claim. “Criminals aren’t going to go out and buy a $1,000 AR pistol,” Brent Ball, owner of 417 Guns in Springfield, Mo., and a 17-year veteran police officer told the Springfield News-Leader. “As a police officer I’m not worried about AR pistols because you can see them. It’s the small gun in a guy’s hand you can’t see that kills you.”

Many see the bullet ban as an assault on the AR-15 and Obama’s back-door bid to end production and sale.

“We are concerned,” said Justin Anderson with Hyatt Gun Shop in Charlotte, N.C., one of the nation’s top sellers of AR-15 style rifles. “Frankly, we’re always concerned when the government uses back-door methods to impose quasi-gun control.”

Groups like the National Shooting Sports Foundation suggest that under BATFE’s new rule, other calibers like popular deer hunting .308 bullets could be banned because they also are used in AR platforms, some of which can be turned into pistol-style guns. “This will have a detrimental effect on hunting nationwide,” said the group.

STUPID MAN , obummer is a lame duck his word carries no impact he makes ignorance seem like a virtue.
This will create a giant price spike and a black market cost to coast this stupid guy really thinks this will work? BLA HA HA HA right there barry more bs from the bs in charge. Hell the borders are wide open millions of banned items will just walk in!

Here is a golden business opportunity. Someone could reverse a engineer and replicate the tooling for these projectiles (only they are special, not the rest of the cartridge) and manufacture and sell those projectiles for hand loading 223 brass.

This is the fallacy of trying to control bullets. They are far more plentiful and easy to make than guns.

Just another illegal attempt to steal rights from citizens by the asswipe in chief. Fuck him the prick! Try to take them, good luck.

This article glosses over the fact that AR-15 rifles are the civilian rendition of the M-16 military rifle. AR-15’s are chambered for the .223 cal Remington while the M-16 uses the NATO 5.56mm round in it’s various iterations. The M-16 can fire both the 5.56mm and .223 cal., the AR-15 should never use the higher pressure NATO 5.56mm due to real safety issues. The 5.56mm is a “full metal jacket” round with a steel core covered with copper and has superior penetration in relation to the .223, which has no steel core and the reason should be obvious. Also the higher pressures generated by the 5.56mm create the danger of bolt blow-back in the AR-15. Obama banning the 5.56mm NATO round isn’t harming the availability of .223 ammo for civilian consumption but if he ever does include the .223 maybe it will be time to invoke the 2nd Amendment.

Sorry, but you are incorrect. My Colt says ar-15 on it and it is chambered in 5.56mm as per the manufacturer’s roll mark. The only difference between an ar-15, and a m16, is that one is semi automatic and the other is select fire.

    • Tom Steinruck

You are also incorrect stating that 5.56 mm is all steel core, only the m855 (green tip) is. M193, which is less expensive and even more available, is not.

    • Steve Perry

Not exactly there Richard…Most of us make sure to buy AR’s chambered for 5.56 instead of marked for .223 for the very reason you mentioned…they are very much on the shelf..but that being said, those rounds are not even effective against light armor…standard steel core AK 7.62 is much more effective…

Most Ars are stamped for 556, including My mini-14. I work in an ordinance unit, allocating ammo to combat units. The ammo in question is the cheap green tip ammo we use for training not the ammo we use in combat. The only time i saw that ammo in use outside of the range was when we issued it to the Afghan national army that we were training. He is not banning all FMJ 556 just the stuff that is affordable.

He has no authority to do this period. It is time to arrest this traitor.

Obama is illegally in our country and illegally in our White House.

No one can take our guns. No one. We the people own this nation. Not Obama. Not Hillary. Not congress and not the courts. Any laws that are opposite of the constitution are null and void period. The leadership in DC is guilty of treason, sedition. Subversion. Espionage. Malfeasance. Seditious conspiracy. Usurpation and several other laws.

Under federal law, 18 USC 242, it is illegal for anyone under the color of law to deprive any person of the rights, privileges or immunities secured by the U.S. Constitution, and under 18 USC 241 it is illegal to conspire to violate such rights. It is a felony punishable by up to 10 years in prison. This could be applied to local, state, or federal law enforcement or military personnel who abuse the rights of citizens. Every state has a similar law.

The key point is this: You not only have the right to disobey an illegal order, but you may also have the duty to apprehend the parties issuing such an order if such issuance is part of the commission of a crime.

When any nation mistrusts its citizens with guns it is sending a clear message. It no longer trusts its citizens because such a government has evil plans…..George Washington

Nobody seems to have picked up that the Washington Examiner article as from *February*. This is old news, and was shut down way back then, there is no indication that he is about to try this crap again.

Nation needn’t fear, firearms are safe
More than 22 years ago, a large number of slightly dishonest radio announcers solemnly warned that President Bill Clinton was going to take away everyone’s firearms. For some reason, it never happened.
Some 16 years later, the same type of announcers warned that President Barack Obama would soon begin taking away everyone’s firearms.
Gosh, when are they going to get moving on this project?
Our nation’s security is at stake!
Common sense and elementary-school math tells us that searching all of America’s 118 million private residences — allowing three police officers and 6 hours for a thorough search of each home — is beyond impossible.
Even if all of America’s 930,000 police officers were deployed on 55-hour work weeks to complete the job, it would take between 73 and 81 years to complete the task. Obviously, if the authorities want to get the thing finished, they’d better not waste another 22 years debating on when to get started.

YEAH! This is the first step to stop the killing of innocent civilians, including children in their school rooms!
Do you really think G.Washington could have imagined what “guns” would mean in the year 2015? He would have been flabbergasted! These guns aren’t being used to hunt food, they are being used to hunt your own fellow citizens, just for fun, down the street, in the neighborhood school, or at the Rec.Center. Doesn’t that just piss you off?
Instead of standing up for more guns you should be standing for helping people with addictions, better mental health services, more job opportunities, etc. etc.
But I don’t think that you will. Prove me wrong.

You are a fucking idiot. And bammy is a fucking idiot. Banning anything will not make anyone safer. Kids are getting killed in classrooms because the idiot excuse for a president has made them gun free zones. And he has created gun free zones in other places. So if your intent is to kill and maim, what better place to do it than a place where you will face no opposition. Far better that all qualified and trained citizens would be allowed to carry firearms anywhere, in order to defend their selves. This would be far better than people having to try and run or hide to try and stay alive when some madman is trying to kill them. But I know that’s a concept that a leftist lieberal could never grasp.

    • Tx. Constitutionalist

OR Native, you are a true liberal, anti-Constitutionalist. The Second Amendment was not to protect our right to keep hunting or dport rifles. It was enacted to allow the people to protect themselves from goreign enemies as well as an oppressive government that takes the peoples’ rights away. “All enemies, foreign or domestic”.

    • Chris Want

2A has nothing to do with hunting for food, it is purely and simply there for Citizens to have the capability to protect themselves against the possibility of attack, attack from Foreign Invading Armies and attack from Tyrannical Government, therefore, Citizens should be given the opportunity to ‘keep and bare’ arms of would be attackers.

  • Pattid

Turns out that although this story was published on Dec 25th, the original Washington Examiner article was from last February and there was such an uproar that it did not fly.
